“We wanted to incorporate the point of view of the Liberty and Art Nouveau era, not only for the style but for the freedom of expression that defined the movement. Our objective was to interpret this sentiment with a contemporary aesthetic, influenced by iPhone photography, image filters, photo editing apps and the rise of NFTs."
— Andrea Mancuso
Andrea Mancuso began by exploring the idea of digital imagery and how the pictures we see on screens could be transformed into tangible objects. With the help of a glass artisan, he transformed a single image into a folding glass screen that channels the aesthetics of decorative objects emblematic of the Liberty era, such as Tiffany lamps and stained glass cathedral windows.
In developing the screen, Mancuso began by running photographs of scenery, like towering trees and grassy fields, through an app that would digitize them, which turned out distorted, shattered into only pixels and fields of color. He then took a single image and further manipulated it, breaking it down into a faceted network of triangles.
Once completed, he called on a glass artisan to transform the image into what would become the final object, a folding room divider. The resulting piece is a sculptural object composed of triangular panes of colored glass arranged in a gradient that shifts from bright emerald green to pale sage with each pane carefully welded together with precious brass seams.
