Toile de Jouy

Lounge chair
by Andrea Grossi
2022

“The concept of the collection is the experimentation and research of a meeting point between tradition and future innovation, research in the contrast between past and future, and a new point of view for the present. The representation of themes, subjects, and craftsmanship contrasts with technology, values, and visions projected towards a better future.”

— Andrea Grossi

The starting point of Grossi's research was the trilogy of books by the historian and anthropologist Yuval Noah Arari, who in the trilogy formed by Sapiens, Homo Deus, and 21 tips for the 21st century, analyzes how past and future can give us a new interpretation and clearer direction for everyday life.

Using 18th-century chinoiserie-inspired Toile de Jouy prints as a creative template, Grossi designed his own interpretation of the fabric in leather using pop icons and recognizable contemporary symbols in his customary white and blue color palette.

The Godia chair designed by Gianluca Cozzarolo is a modern interpretation of a classic wingback armchair. The seat sits low to the ground within tall, peaked armrests, a separate oval headrest and short but imposing metal legs. Across the surface of the leather upholstery, the detailed illustrations weave a captivating narrative, a continuation of Grossi’s explorations as a fashion designer.
