Immersione

Mirror
by Duccio Maria Gambi
2022

“I’m always trying to exalt and illustrate the beauty of stone. When I started working with stones, I felt that we often lose their essence. Stones become just a material that is functional to an aesthetic target that entirely separates the final object from its soul. I try to act with the minimum intervention to underline and illustrate the attraction I feel.”

Gambi’s process is first guided by chance and intuition and then by precision and skill. He found the marble used in the collection by visiting stone yards in Carrara and searching for evocative off-cut shapes. He then translated that shape into 2D drawings, which were used as a template to cut a mirror image in the reflective steel.

With Immersione, Gambi contrasts the rough natural texture of the off-cut stone with smooth, highly reflective steel. Each mirror is formed of a single piece of found off-cut marble to which a sheet of reflective steel has been affixed along the flat side. On the other side, the rough and natural parts of the stone are left raw to focus on their dense natural beauty.

The mirrored steel has a dematerializing effect on the marble, the reflecting steel applied on the cut surfaces of a marble block generates a double exchange between the rock and the surrounding environment. Steel, through reflection, visually cancels the stone and its weight allowing the object to merge into its environment.
