Sima
Lounge chair
by Andrea Steidl
2022
“The initial idea for the two collections started as a research project on composite materials, where the waste of natural materials from industrial activities is utilized, and thanks to a binder blended together, creating a unique aesthetic. It is a research of the contrast and harmony between the solid/rigid, and the soft/curvacious.”
— Andrea Steidl
Andrea Steidl’s recent research explores composite materials derived from industrial waste. Using a resin binder, these inert but natural materials — base, hemp, cork, fragments of stone, and metals — are blended together in a way that seems to come from a distant world or ancient aesthetic and together create an entirely eco-sustainable product.
The Sima seating system is composed of a three-seater sofa, an angled sectional and an upholstered chair. Each piece is formed of a rounded base and softly curving backrest set atop a monolithic plinth made of Steidl’s own composite of reused materials.
With Sima, Steidl’s goal was to create a dialogue between a solid and structural material and the relaxed softness of the upholstery. The base becomes the decisive aesthetic: no longer just a component of an otherwise complex object, it becomes the protagonist itself.
